 Green in Texas

The Environment

Our schools could be going green!  Hillside Academy and Stephens Elementary already have.  These 2 schools have joined the “Go Green Initiative”.  Your school can, too.  Did you know that paper comprises 40% of our landfills?  School districts contribute the largest amount.  We can make a difference through paper recycling at each of our schools.  We can even earn money for our programs through recycling.

The “Go Green Initiative” is global.  It is a child advocacy program formed to protect children’s health and prepare the future for our children.

Why Go Green?

o       More people = fewer natural resources.

o       Schools are a significant source of waste generation in most communities.

o       Schools can have a long term impact.

o       Schools act as a catalyst.

o       It’s the right thing to do to ensure our children’s future.

Your school can find out more and sign up through the Texas PTA website or contact your Council Environmental Chairman.

Environmental Contests

“What Can I Do?” is the topic for this year’s environmental contest for Pre K – 12th grade.  The categories include media art, photography, print advertising, newsletter, and public service announcements.  All entries must be on standard letter size paper.  They are due Feb. 1st.  Start thinking!

RECYCLED ART CONTEST – grades 9-12 only – Deadline November 1st

How fun!  Students create recycled 3-dimensional art from previously discarded materials.  It should be no larger than 9” x 9” x 17”.  Submit at least 4 photos.  They must be received by Texas PTA by Nov. 1st.  Entry forms are available from the Texas PTA website or contact me.  What a fantastic project for art teachers and shop teachers to incorporate!  Every high school student is welcome to enter.
