WHAT CAN A KID DO TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT?
We have great kids in this district. There are bound to be great answers. Let’s give them the opportunity to express themselves. “What Can I Do?” is the theme of the Environmental Awareness Contest.
LOCAL PTA’S RESPONSIBILITY: Publicize the contest. The PTA President and/or the Environmental Chairman is responsible for giving students entry forms. Set your own school deadline for entries to be turned in. The entries must be judged. The best 3 entries per category and grade level are to be delivered to Council at the March 5th Association meeting (Harris Hill Administration Bldg, 2nd floor between 8:30am and Noon). Local PTAs may extend the Feb. 1st deadline, but must send winning entries to Council by March 5th. (If local PTAs set a Feb. 22nd deadline, that would allow 2weeks for judging before the Council deadline of March 5th.)
JUDGING CRITERIA: Does the entry effectively convey the theme? Does it convey a message that makes the public want to take care of the environment? Is the entry creatively based on the grade and age level of the entrant? Does the entry meet the criteria of the individual category? (Judges should be selected on their expertise in the media industry for photography, reporting, and graphic & commercial art, etc.)

A Special Opportunity for Exceptional Early Entrees Meet the Mayor!
At a press release on Feb. 4th Mayor Ron Jones will sign the “U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement”. The Mayor would like to meet GISD students who are exceptional environmentalists. It would be an opportunity to share your entry on the Atrium stage with the Mayor and the press. It is an opportunity to show your support in his announcement. “Garland is going green!”
If you feel you have received an exceptional entry by Thursday, January 31st, please contact me immediately. The entries will be reviewed on Friday. The event is the following Monday.
Please do not hesitate to call me with questions regarding the contest or the event.
Sincerely, Roxanne
