RECYCLING TOUR & STATE AWARDS
Garland Mayor Ron Jones announced Garland is Going Green. We now have a full stream recycling facility in Garland, Vista Fibers. Several schools will begin a pilot recycling program next school year. PTA has been invited to tour the new facility as a group after school is out. The tour is tentatively set for Tuesday, June 10th at 10am. This will be fascinating. If you would like to be included, please email me. All PTA members are welcome. The tour will last approximately one hour. The future of our planet depends on our recycling.
The State Awards for the Environmental Awareness Contest have been posted. Through PTA our district submitted 84 entries. We have:
 |
25 Awards of Excellence
47 Awards of Merit
12 Awards of Honorable Mention |
 |
Our entries were creative, artistic, skillful, and thought provoking. I am very proud of our students.
All entries receiving Honorable Mention will receive certificates in the mail from State. All entries receiving an Award of Excellence or an Award of Merit will receive an invitation to attend the Reflections and Environmental Award ceremony that will be held in August. Certificates will be handed out at the awards ceremony. I presume that will take place in Austin. Students who are unable to attend will receive their certificate in the mail in July. A list of all Environmental Awareness Awards are in this newsletter.
I personally want to thank all of our schools, students, PTA Presidents, and Environmental Chairman who participated in this amazing contest. At the local level these schools had terrific participation. Club Hill had 159 entries. Thank you Stephanie Shubert and Tammi Omer. Sewell followed with 100 entries thanks to Denise Burmingham and Colleen Driggers. Brandenburg had 81 entries thanks to Lisa Thomas and Denise Spell. Walnut Glen received 77 entries. Thank you Laura Ballard and Melody Buller.

I look forward to an even more wonderful year beginning with Summer Seminar in Austin in July. Go to www.txpta.org to sign up. There will be different environmental workshops offered during each of the six sessions. I welcome you to join me. Send me an email if you will be attending as an environmental chairman for next year. Guaranteed to be enlightening.
High school GET READY. The Recycled Art Contest is in October. Perfect for art and shop classes. Open to any high school student.
Please be sure to email me with contact info for your school’s environmental chairman. We want to start early next year.
Have a great summer. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, RETHINK.
In every moment we make an impact. In every moment we have a choice to do something amazing.
