Moving is hard for everyone

especially Children!

Moving from one house to another is a big stress for everyone.   It’s a bit more stressful for children.  They will be leaving everything they know behind.

•   They will need to say goodbye to all their friends
•     They will need to leave their school and teachers
•  They will leave the home that has provided a sense of safety and security
•   They may need to leave all the special things they made for their home.  Plants, room decorations or special places will be left behind.

This can leave your children feeling powerless and anxious.  Here are a few great tips to make moving easier.

1.    Talk and listen actively to their concerns.  Be available anytime they want to talk

2.    Allow your children to plan for their new room. Give them the power to make their space their own.

3.    Start early to gather addresses, phone numbers and email address of all the important people in their lives.  Friends are important but don’t forget favorite teachers, coaches and other special friends.

4.    Help plan goodbyes for your kids.  Have a packing party or a final sleep over.  Something to say goodbye.

5.    Allow them to help pack and keep track of their items.  This will help them protect their valuables.   Keep one special box for the moving day.  This box should remain in their control and contains all of their favorite items.

6.    Don’t forget to say Goodbye to the neighborhood.  Did you have a special restaurant?  Maybe an ice cream shop you visited every summer?

7.    Plan life in the new neighborhood.  Look into the sports programs, schools and neighborhood parks.   Allow your child to visit these places so they can start their favorite activities in their new neighborhood.
