WE'RE GOING GREEN!!!

Last September my Cool Cities team met with Mayor Jones. We espoused all the reasons why the Mayor should sign the “U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement.” In December we received a call that he was ready to sign. In January we met to plan the signing and press release.
On Feb. 4th four Garland students met Garland Mayor Ron Jones to show their support for "greening Garland". On that day Mayor Jones conducted a press conference for his signing of "the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement". The Mayor's signing announced Garland's intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our city. Mayor Jones is joining more than 700 mayors in the fight to reduce global warming. Lauren Purser (Austin Academy), Ben Ballard (Walnut Glen), and Maddie and Georgia Shubert (Club Hill) were able to attend the signing by submitting early entries for the Texas PTA Environmental Awareness Contest. Mayor Jones thanked these students for their support and referred to the students several times in his speech.
Mayor Jones announced the "Garland Goes Green Festival" at Firewheel Town Center from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, April 19th. There will be many booths with information and vendors to help citizens go green. The Garland Council of PTAs will display entries from the Environmental Awareness Contest at the festival. Students must turn in entries to their school’s PTA.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS CONTEST DEADLINE

March 12th, the next Association meeting, is the deadline to turn in your school’s entries to Council. You may bring your entries between 8:30 AM - Noon to the Harris Hill Administration Building, 2nd floor. Please contact me if you need to make other arrangements. Be sure to summarize your school’s total entries on the LOCAL ENTRY FORM when submitting to Council. The form is included in this newletter.
Each school may set its own deadline, but they must be judged and sent to Council by March 12th. You may send 3 entries per category per grade level. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or write me.
Please delight me with a great response. The entries turned into Council will be displayed at the Festival April 19th. The students with entries going on to State will be asked to duplicate their entry for the festival. Hoping students with PSAs will want to perform that day. All help that day will be most appreciated.
TEXAS PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY
Being an environmentalist, the candidates’ stand on energy and the environment are very important to me. If you share that concern and want to learn more, you may want to visit each candidate’s website.

Let’s make sure our students are aware of the Texas Presidential Primary and involve them in discussion both in class and at the dinner table. This is an amazing time.
