Get Ready – Texas PTA Environmental Awareness Contest
This year’s contest has a great theme. “What Can I Do?” Parents and teachers can brainstorm with their students to identify environmental concerns. Then brainstorm ideas on actions to take. Once students have identified their environmental concern and a corresponding action, they may express their thoughts through either:
-
a written newspaper article (an editorial or factual info)
-
design a newsletter (pictures optional)
-
draw media art
-
design a print advertisement
-
a photograph
-
produce a 30 second public service announcement in audio (6th – 12th grade) or video format (9th – 12th grade)
Articles and drawings may be no larger than letter size paper. Each school will pick the best three entries per grade level per category. These entries must be turned in to Council by March 1st. It’s a wonderful contest. Please help your children get involved. Entry forms and rules are included in this newsletter. With the holidays approaching, it is never too soon to get started.
Keep Texas Beautiful
Has your school become a Campus Affiliate? It is not too late and it is free through PTA. It is an amazing resource for ideas, programs, lesson plans, contests, and more. Your school need only commit to one of the following events. KTB can help with ideas, but you choose what your campus will do.
-
Texas Recycles Day (Nov 15)
-
Great American Cleanup (March 1 – May 31)
-
Don’t Mess With Texas Trash Off (April 5)
-
Arbor Day (April 25)
-
Texas Waterway Cleanup Program: Year Round
You can sign up through the Keep Texas Beautiful website www.ktb.org. Periodic emails are sent to campus affiliates announcing new programs, contests, and possibilities. The emails may just be the greatest part of the program.
Al Gore Wins Nobel Prize
In October former Vice President Al Gore and the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) share the Nobel Peace Prize for work to bring the world’s attention to the climate crisis. The prize is a huge step in recognizing the climate crisis and its threat to global peace. Hopefully we will start working together globally to reduce the effects of global warming. In acceptance of the prize, Al Gore said, “The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level.”
Congratulations, Mr. Gore.
If you are interested in having Al Gore’s slideshow presentation for your students, two professors in Dallas are making that possible. Just contact me and we will set you up. If you have not seen An Inconvenient Truth, a global warning, I have a copy you may borrow.
Want to hear from you
