RECYCLED ART CONTEST for H. S. Students
CALLING ALL H. S. ART TEACHERS, SHOP TEACHERS, PRINCIPALS, & ALL ENVIRONMENTALLY INSPIRED TEACHERS
What a fun contest for high school students! Create a 3-dimensional piece of art constructed from discarded or recycled materials only. Artwork may be no larger than 9” x 9” x 17”. Submit 4 photos in .jpg format with the Official Entry Form to your PTSA, which in turn must be submitted to Texas PTA by Nov. 1st. Entry form included in this newsletter.
Teachers, is this not a great project for your classes? It could be graded, or better yet, done for extra credit. Does the artwork need to carry a message? No, it just needs to be art, made from discarded and/or recycled materials.
Can students enter on their own? Yes, just take your photos and submit to your PTSA with the official entry form before Nov. 1st.
Students, if you will email me your photos, I would like to print them in this newsletter and recognize you..
Who is to say what art is? Using discarded materials, I made recycling collection boxes. I called it art.
Any questions? Please contact me. Let’s get involved!

CITY OF GARLAND ALUMINUM CAN CHALLENGE
Families collect and store aluminum cans. Rinse and crush for easy delivery. Cans will be collected at school during Texas Recycles Week, Nov. 12 – 17. Your child, the school, or PTA can give you specific dates. Parents will be needed to transport the cans to Texas Recycling on Shiloh between Forest & Walnut. The cans will be weighed in and all schools paid for their aluminum. There is a first place cash award to the school with the most pounds per student.
Can schools continue to collect after the City challenge? Of course, Texas Recycling will pay for your cans year round.
KEEP TEXAS BEAUTIFUL (KTB) – Campus Affiliate Resources
This wonderful program is free to any campus with a PTA. Keep Texas Beautiful has many resources to pull ideas from, such as school wide recycling contests, slogan contests, adopt a street or a spot, environmental commercials, environmental clubs, recycled art contest (see, you don’t have to be in H.S. to do recycled art!) AND MORE, MORE, MORE….
You must participate in one event. Choose from:
1. Make a Difference Day (4th Saturday of October)
2. Texas Recycles Day (Nov. 15th)
3. Great American Clean-up (March 1-May 31)
4. Arbor Day (April 25th)
5. Texas Waterway Cleanup Program (Year round)
KTB is part of Keep America Beautiful. There will be more information at the October 3rd Association meeting. If you cannot attend, please email me and I will send you a more extensive handout.

THE COUNCIL RECYCLES
If your school has not adopted a recycling program for inkjet cartridges, cell phones, DVDs, video games & consoles, and digital cameras, you have an opportunity to donate these items to the council. Funds will be used for scholarships. We will have a collection box at each Association meeting, first Wednesday of each month. We appreciate all donations. The landfill appreciates you, too. Many thanks.
I AM HERE TO HELP YOU.
Please feel free to call or email me.
